Staying Active At Home

Hi SVS students and families!

While at home with your family make sure to stay healthy and active! Just because school is cancelled does not mean playing outside is. Click on the calendar below to enlarge it and follow along with the daily activities.

Looking for additional ways to stay active? Check out GoNoodle's Good Energy At Home (link below) initiative to keep kids active during this time or YouTube Just Dance Kids and click on their favourite link.

Sandstone MacEwan Community Association has been collecting used skates for kids in the community who cannot afford to skate. If you are a family who would like to receive or who would like to donate skates, please contact info@sandstomemacewan.com.  As well, if you are interested, there is a family willing to do some sharpening and some intro lessons! What a great opportunity!

Hello SVS families!

Welcome back to new and action packed year at SVS.

We have a busy couple of months in PE coming up.

The month of January will be our Mission Impossible obstacle course and finishing off with a week of gymnastics.

In February the Div II students will be working on volleyball skills, while Div I will be working on underhand throwing/catching and net and wall games.

During the second week of February from Feb 10-12 grades 1-6 will be ice-skating on the rink beside our school. The Skate Shack has been booked for this week and they provide skates and helmets for students who do not have their own. Students who have their own skating equipment and would like to bring it please feel free!

That's all for now, stay active SVS!

SVS Cross Country Team

Congratulations to our Cross Country runners for their amazing demonstration of athleticism at last week's meet at Cecil Swanson School. Our grade 5 girls swept their category with places 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th and 6th! Congrats to the grade 4 boys on the top places in their race as well. Our grade 6 girls finished strong capturing 2nd, 4th and other finishes.  Way to represent Simons Valley School!

Curriculum

This week in P.E. the school began our kicking/soccer unit. Unfortunately the snow kept classes inside, however we are positive we will be back out to the field by next week. Parents, please send your child to school prepared for P.E. outside.

Intramurals

Div I intramurals have begun for the month of October. Grade 1's are on Tuesdays, Grade 2's are on Wednesday and Grade 3's are on Thursday at lunch.

Terry Fox

Great work Simons Valley students on raising $1088.15 for cancer research with our Toonies for Terry fundraiser. Although we were just shy of our fundraising goal, maybe we can still convince Mrs. Kruger to add some pink highlights to her hair!

Let's stay active SVS!

Toonies For Terry Fundraiser

Our school wide Toonies For Terry Fundraiser began this week. Students are encouraged to bring in a toonie to raise money for important cancer research.

This year as a school we are hoping to achieve our fundraising goal of 1 toonie per student. If we reach this goal Mrs. Kruger has pledged to dye her hair pink!

SVS families, let's work together to help raise awareness for cancer and to get a pink-headed librarian!

Hi Simons Valley School,

We've had a great start to our physical education program!

Div I Curriculum
Div I students are working on cooperative games and perfecting proper running technique in preparation for the Terry Fox Run coming up at the end of the month.

Div II Curriculum
Div II students have been busy ramping up for their track and field meet on Thursday September 26. Students have been learning long jump and sprints and next week will be getting into baseball throw and 300m running.

Cross Country Team
Ms. Blyth and I kicked off the cross country team this past Tuesday. Practices will be held twice a week during the last recess on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Students from all grades, who would like to join, are welcome and encouraged to come out and run with us!

For students in Grade 4, 5, and 6 there will be a cross country meet on Tuesday October 1st at Cecil Swanson School from 3:30pm-5:30pm. As this is an extracurricular activity, students must arrange their own ride to and from the meet separately with parents.

The course the students will run will be 2km in length and the kids will have the opportunity to race against 10 other schools!

Track and Field Meet Div II

Div II students have their 1st field trip coming up quickly on Thursday September 26 at the Foothills Athletic Park. All students will be competing in long jump, baseball throw and running events. The entire field trip will be held outside. Please ensure your child is prepared to spend the day outside in the elements. Pack lots of layers, snacks, and water!

Lots of hands are needed to make this day happen. If you are able to volunteer for the day, please contact me or your child's classroom teacher!

P.E. Leadership Applications

Students in grade 5 and 6 are welcome to apply to be a part of the Physical Education Leadership team. As a member of the team students help organize and facilitate intramurals at lunch, whole school sport days, setting up and tearing down assemblies and much more! It is a great leadership opportunity!

Students interested in applying are asked to write me a letter explaining why they would be a good member of the team, why they want to be a part of the team and how they would contribute. Applications are due at the end of the month!
